The students in our third grade class at the Academy of St. James have been working very hard this semester. We are extremely proud of what the students have accomplished so far.
In math, the class recently finished a unit on multiplication and they are moving right into division. The students enjoyed practicing their multiplication facts by participating in multiplication relay races.
The reading program has focused on different literary genres. The students were introduced to the differences between fiction, nonfiction, fantasy and folklore. This month they are reading an informational text about the importance of voting. Once they complete reading the text the students will be voting for their very own class mascot. Next month, they will be taking a break from the reading series and begin reading novels together as a group. The first novel will be Charlotte’s Web.
Class science lessons have focused upon the concepts of motion and force. The students learned about spring force, tension force, contact force, and friction. They enjoyed discovering how the shape of an object affects its motion. The students calculated how fast a flat piece of paper falls from one meter above the ground. They then repeated the process with a crumpled piece of paper and a paper airplane.
The third grade class hope you had a very happy Thanksgiving and a wish you a very joyful Advent season.
