It’s hard to believe that it’s November already. The holidays will be upon us in no time! The Second graders have been working hard all year learning lots of new things and having fun while doing it.

First, we’ve been discussing the importance of families. The children wrote, illustrated, and even brought in photos of their families and shared them with their classmates. We even discussed the importance of our furry friends being members of our family as well! They were so excited sharing about their families. It was nice to see.

In Math, we’ve been moving right along. Always working on basic addition and subtraction
facts, we’ve also covered graphing, data, odd and even numbers, place value, number words, odd and even numbers, and comparing numbers. We’re currently working on addition and
subtraction with regrouping. We’ll be starting subtraction with regrouping soon which can be a
challenging concept.

In writing, we have been learning how to write poems, use sequence words, include topic and
closing sentences, and how to develop a paragraph. I’m very pleased with the progress they have made already and look forward to what the future months will bring.
We are very lucky to have new Science and Social studies book this year. Lots of good things to
learn about such as Properties of Matter, Earth’s Water and Land, Plants and Animals and their
Habitats. In Social Studies, we will learn about Families of today and the past, Government,
Goods and Services and American Culture.

The best part of all is that we have been working in centers several times a week. This is when
small group instruction happens and the students get to practice the skills that we’ve been
working on with their peers. This hands-on opportunity is so important to solidifying their
understanding of what’s been taught. It’s clear to see that it is also their favorite part of the day!
All good stuff happening here in Second grade.
